WELSH CUP - Afan lido 0-4 LLANELLI

This third round Welsh Youth cup tie was twice called off at Stebonheath and under Welsh FA rules it was, to the surprise of everyone, switched to the Marston's Stadium. This was our first game since December 2nd and it showed in our performance which felt flat throughout, Luke Borrelli made his first appearance since breaking a bone in his foot in a first team league cup tie. We conceded a free kick 20 yards out in the first 30 seconds but the kick hit the wall and was partially cleared only for us to concede a second free kick 30 yards out, this time we cleared our lines. Another Llanelli attack into the area was stopped by some good covering by Rory Healey. Our first meaningful attack after 7 minutes saw Jonathan Hood shoot from 25 yards but straight at the keeper. We then played the ball forward for Carl Payne but the Llanelli defence crowded him out and cleared the danger. Llanelli should have taken the lead after 13 minutes following a right wing free kick. Josh Tobin did well to block the shot but the ball rebounded to a Llanelli player who from inside the 6 yard box shot wide. On 16 minutes Llanelli were awarded a free kick on half way, Jonathan Hood cut out the kick but the ball was played into the area and a shot ended up going over the bar. The Llanelli pressure continued and they should again have gone ahead after 24 minutes when Josh Tobin again saved but failed to hold a shot, the ball went to a Llanelli player who from inside the 6 yard box scooped the ball over the crossbar. Remi Whitelock then intercepted an intended pass and made ground down the left and this set up a period of pressure from us but we failed to make inroads on goal. On 28 minutes Llanelli took the lead, a left sided attack saw them get to the byeline and cut in towards goal. The attacker was fouled in the area and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Josh Tobin guessed correctly and saved the kick but once again he failed to hold it and the penalty taker followed up to put the ball into the net. Three minutes later it could have been two but their striker missed the ball in the box and when it was played back to him although he put the ball into the net, he was offside. Llanelli continued to attack but the defence held out then just before the interval the ball was played wide to Remi Whitelock who made ground down the left and his shot from 25 yards brought a diving save from the keeper resulting in a corner. Matthew Beynon rose highest to head goalwards but his header was cleared off the line and Llanelli broke quickly catching us light at the back but once again they shot wide from a good position although we put the attacker under pressure.
Again Llanelli started the second half the better and won a series of corners before Matthew Beynon headed the ball out to Carl Payne who combined with Jonathan Hood and Luke Borrelli but it ended when Luke was caught offside in the area. On the hour James McEvoy played the ball wide to Remi Whitelock who won a corner, the Llanelli keeper under pressure punched clear. Then Carl Payne did well to reach the ball just short of the byeline and crossed into the box but Remi Whitelock headed the ball over the bar. We went two down on 72 minutes when a Llanelli player found himself one on one with Josh Tobin and scored with ease. We made a couple of substitutions to try and retrieve the situation but in chasing the game we were caught out in the back and we conceded a third on 83 minutes and with virtually the last kick of the game Llanelli scored a fourth.
