We missed a number of chances this afternoon but
credit must go to Pentwyn who made it difficult for us, they caused us more
trouble in the back than a number of first division sides have.
Early on we were camped in the Pentwyn area but were unable to score the early
goal. Luke Borrelli with a 25 yard shot which shaved the post being our best
chance. Then on 9 minutes Pentwyn took the lead, they had a free kick 40 yards
out and played the ball into the box, Mike Lewis decided to come for the ball
and failed to make it and centre back Lee Grant headed into the empty net.
We again attacked but Scott McCoubrey in a good position delayed his shot and
the chance was lost. We continued to attack and a Carl Payne shot was
blocked but fell to Luke Borrelli who buried his shot from 6 yards. So at
least we were level on 14 minutes. Credit to Anthony Thomas in the Pentwyn goal
who dived full length to deny another Luke Borrelli scoring attempt. We
continued to pressurise the Pentwyn defence with corner after corner but somehow
they survived. On 28 minutes Pentwyn for a few seconds were in seventh heaven as
they again got the ball in the net after a free kick but they were denied the
lead by the linesman's flag for offside. The same pattern continued with attack
upon attack somehow being repelled and it seemed only a matter of time before we
took the lead. As the first half was coming to an end, Carl Payne headed
over, he also headed straight at the keeper and had a shot which the keeper
dived to save.
The second half continued in the same vein,
straight from the kick off Scott McCoubrey was played in and had a one on one
with the keeper but hit it straight at him. A Carl Payne shot took a deflection
and hit the crossbar then from yet another corner Carl again headed over the
bar. From the goal kick they almost caught us out, Mike Lewis made a great save
diving to his right to keep the scores level. Two minutes later another through
ball caught us out but Shaun Galsworthy just managed to get a touch on the ball
to clear the danger. We then made a triple substitution but we still couldn't
find the final touch, then we almost conceded when the defenders knocked the
ball around and conceded a throw near the corner flag. Daniel Lancey went down
the left crossed in to Scott McCoubrey, the ball going for yet another corner.
Then on 68 minutes Daniel Lancey played a one two with Scott McCoubrey, got into
the box and with the keeper coming out to close him down he coolly lobbed the
ball over the keeper into the goal. The pattern of the game continued with us
winning numerous corners, their keeper made some excellent saves and some last
ditch defending. Then with 6 minutes to go Chris Pridham picked up a loose ball
and shot from 25 yards forcing the keeper into yet another full length save.
Finally with four minutes to go Luke Borrelli scored his second to finally see
off the challenge. It was almost like ping pong with Craig Baker, Scott
McCoubrey and Nathan White all having shots blocked before Luke shot from 25
yards into the bottom right corner of the goal. Credit to Pentwyn who battled
throughout and made this as difficult as they could especially as we were
misfiring in front of goal. We now have a home tie with Cardiff Bay Quins in
November.
