The
Reserves won their second round reserve cup match and in doing so also beat the
terrible weather conditions we've suffered recently. This was one of only three
matches played this afternoon. As the first team game was off we gave a run out
to recent signings Rhys Williams and Daniel Lancey while Michael Waters and Mark
Jones also played.
In
the first minute Matthew Beynon broke up an Ely attack and fed Daniel Lancey
wide left, he made ground and crossed but it was cut out for a corner. A second
corner on 16 minutes was cleared off the line and Mark Buckley missed the
rebound.
On
20 minutes an Ely attack was broken up when a pass hit the ref and was picked up
by our midfield, the ball was played forward to Mark Jones but he shot wide from
the edge of the area. We took the lead on 22 minutes when out of nothing Adam
Beynon chipped the keeper from 35 yards, the keeper on the edge of the area
could do nothing to save it. There was a good response from Ely with a first
time shot from 25 yards going just wide. We went two up on 26 minutes when Aaron
Keefe played the ball wide to Daniel Lancey who made ground and crossed into the
six yard box for Mark Jones to head past the keeper. Ely had a couple of corners
and free kicks which Gareth Couch held without much difficulty.
Mark
Buckley was unlucky on 40 minutes when he shot from 25 yards just wide of the
far post. Right on half time we went three up, the Ely keeper made a great save
from a Mark Jones shot managing to turn it onto the crossbar and over for a
corner. When the corner came in he punched it straight to Matthew Beynon some 30
yards out, Matthew hit it first time over everyone and into the net.
Straight
from the restart we won a corner which Mark Buckley headed against the crossbar.
Mark Jones made it 4-0 on the hour when he stooped low to head a Mark Buckley
cross over the keeper and into the far corner of the net. It was five on 75
minutes when Remi Whitelock played the ball down the line to Steve Hughes who
made ground and crossed for Mark Jones to head in from 6 yards. Right on time
Steve Hughes closed in on goal but shot wide from 10 yards.
