The kindest thing you can say about our performance was that it was a bad
day at the office. No one could put their hand up and say they played
well.
We went behind in the fifth minute, ironically from our free kick on the edge
of the Aberaman area. Michael Waters instead of knocking it to the far
post tried to place it between two Aberaman defenders to Carl Payne on the
right hand touchline. It was blocked and knocked to the half way line
where their striker made ground and crossed into the area for Jon Phillips to
score from just inside our area. Michael Waters had a shot blocked just
after this but we were finding it difficult to string two passes together.
On
21 minutes Carl Payne was brought down in the box but the referee ignored a
good shout for a penalty, the ball was cleared but Scott McCoubrey picked it
up, made ground and chipped the keeper who did well to backtrack and tip the
ball over for a corner. The corner was cleared and a long ball forward
found Mattie Davies with a one on one and he buried the second goal. We
were two down and both goals came when we were caught on the break and short at
the back. Carl Payne was unlucky when with his back to goal he tried a
bicycle kick, the ball hitting the crossbar bouncing down before Aberaman
cleared the danger. We were awarded a penalty after 32 minutes, the only
two people who thought this was a penalty were the ref and linesman. Up
stepped Mark Jones and his shot to the keepers left lacked power and was easily
saved. We won a couple of corners but failed to hit the target from them
and just before half time Carl Payne made ground and found Sam Wade on the
right, he hit the ball at pace across the goal but there was no one in support
and the ball went out for a goal kick. Without playing well in the first
half we'd hit the crossbar and missed a penalty.
The second half continued in the same vein, the third goal on the hour was
again scored by Mattie Davies who chased a long ball forward more in hope than
anything else as we had three defenders and the keeper back but none of the
dealt with it and he shot into the empty net from the edge of the area. We used
all three subs but no one was able to provide a spark in the worst performance
I've seen this season.
