Afan Lido FC match reports

Mar 21 - 2009

Afan Lido 1-0 Caldicot Town

Corey Thomas, Daniel Lancey and Justin Williams all missed this game with injuries, there was a welcome return for Shaun Morgan in defence while Sam Wade made an appearance on the bench.

We should have taken the lead in the fourth minute after Shaun Best had beaten the offside trap made ground down the right and squared the ball in for Scott McCoubrey who shot with his weaker right foot and failed to make a clean connection and the ball was cleared. We continued to put pressure on the visitors with Carl Evans heading the ball to Shaun Best who again beat the defender and squared the ball in for Scott McCoubrey but from no more than a couple of yards he had his shot blocked by the keeper. It was Scott v the keeper again after 13 minutes when he received a pass from Mika Chunuonsee down the left, cut in and shot low to the keeper's right but he dived to save at his near post. After 20 minutes Caldicot in a rare attack did manage a shot but it was wide of the target but at least it was a reminder to us that we needed a goal. Just before the half hour Scott McCoubrey picked up a throw into the box, turned and shot just over the crossbar. Lack of talking was evident in the minutes leading up to half time when Caldicot had a free kick which was drifting out for a goal kick but Shaun Morgan headed it behind for a corner. Luckily it didn't cost us as they knocked the ball out for a goal kick.

Rory McCreesh was called into action in the opening minutes of the second half diving to his left to save. From a left wing corner their keeper dropped the ball under the crossbar but no one reacted quickly enough to score and he managed to gather at the second attempt. Just after the hour we attacked down the right with Carl Evans moving forward and passing to Craig Langdon who beat his defender got into the box but shot over the bar. Sam Wade replaced Shaun Best after 65 minutes and he knocked the ball wide to Carl Payne but his cross went behind for a goal kick. Another Mika Chunuonsee corner was headed out from under the crossbar and it was beginning to look as if we weren't going to score. Craig Langdon was playing with more confidence now and he played a one-two with Carl Payne beat a defender but again his cross went behind for a goal kick. On 82 minutes we finally scored, Scott McCoubrey from 15 yards gave the keeper no chance with a left foot shot. It came out of nothing but at last the pressure told on a tiring Caldicot side. They now tried pushing forward and won a couple of free kicks in dangerous positions but we dealt with them and saw the game out. In added on time Vince Lewis made his debut from the bench replacing the hard working Craig Langdon.
