First half goals from debutants Scott McCourbrey
and Darren Griffiths sealed
the three points in an entertaining opening league fixture against
Bryntirion. Both sides had a number of new signings on display and the
first to show was Ian Turner who made a break down the right but his cross
was cut out by the defence. After 7 minutes a great ball out of defence by
Paul Evans found Darren Griffiths in space out on the left he cut inside but
again the defence cleared his intended cross.
On 9 minutes we had a free
kick wide left 25 yards out, Ian Turner knocked in a superb cross which
eluded everyone and hit the far post with Paul Evans inches away from
touching it in. After 11 minutes we had a right wing corner which Scott
McCourbrey knocked over everyone to the waiting Paul Evans but his first time
shot went over the bar. Bryntirion had a free kick on half way which was
headed out for a corner and from a good position the cross was headed wide.
On 18 minutes Dan Williams headed clear under pressure with a Bryntirion
striker waiting to pounce. Jonathan Cuss then found space on the left hand
side of the area he cut inside and shot over the bar from 15 yards. On 24
minutes we took the lead, John Felton, Ian Turner, Karl Lewis were all
involved in the build up before Scott McCourbrey scored with a left footed
shot from 12 yards across the keeper. Within 3 minutes it was 2-0 when Dan
Williams took a throw in and received the ball back from John Felton, Dan
measured his cross to perfection finding Darren Griffiths head and he did
the rest scoring from 8 yards.
On the half hour Michael Waters picked the
ball up just outside our area and carried it for 40 yards before releasing
Daren Griffiths but Darren had just strayed offside so the move broke down.
Just before half time we almost made it three when Ian Turner stepped past a
couple of tackles and shot from just inside the box but Josh Payne in goal
made an excellent save. At the start of the second half the wind picked up
and we had some heavy rain to contend with as we faced the elements.
Bryntirion had a free kick on the right in line with the edge of the penalty
area and with everyone waiting on the cross, the kick was aimed at the near
post with Leon Cosker alert enough to save diving to his left to turn the
ball behind for a corner. We were unable to get any worthwhile possession
at this time, clearances we going straight to the Bryntirion players and
coming straight back.
On the hour we finally made ground down the left only
for John Felton to shoot wide from a difficult angle. This however saw us
gain more possession and again following good work by Ian Turner who found
Darren Griffiths in the box but he was crowded out before he could get in a
shot.
Sam Wade replaced John Felton on 68 minutes and he crossed the ball
in from the left and hit the far post without anyone able to touch in the
chance. Amazingly on 79 minutes Steve Crabbe played the ball back to
Michael Waters who shot from 15 yards and his shot hit the post. Again
Bryntirion had lots of possession but seldom looked as though they would get
back into the game however on 84 minutes Nana Baah broke through the middle
only for Leon Cosker to save his shot with his legs. We went down the other
end and Darren Griffiths had a shot saved by their keeper's legs and in
added on time Corey Thomas made ground down the left, fed Sam Wade who
instead of shooting passed to Scott McCourbrey but the pass was just to high
for him and the chance was lost.
